VFX/PDX and OMSI are teaming to bring you a can’t miss night of Reel Science, taking us behind the scenes of Pixar’s Coco.

Sponsored by SideFX, Pixar Animation Studios FX Supervisor Michael O’Brien and FX Lead Keith Klohn will be live in-person, navigating us through the challenges met during production. Pixar’s workflow and innovation will be on full display, highlighting their FX setups and the power of SideFX Houdini in their toolset. These are behind the scenes “dvd extras” and untold stories from the trenches that you’ll never see anywhere else! We are lucky to have Michael and Keith take the time out from other projects and a busy awards season.

Speaking of awards, we’ll open this event with a few words from local design shop The Other House, detailing their tasty FX work completed for this year’s Emmys award show. Always good to have some local flavor involved and beautiful imagery created for the Emmys should set the stage for Pixar well!  Chris Roth will be on hand to discuss design + concept, joined by collaborators Michael Miller (Compositing) and Brian Smith (3D).

A screening of Coco will follow the presentation. This event is open to all ages, so feel free to bring your future 3D artist and filmmaker children!

Thanks again to sponsors SideFX, OMSI, Sprocketship, 3DV, The Other House, 9iFX, and Minimal Massive.

Don’t miss this truly unique chance to catch some of the Coco team right here in Portland. Thursday, March 8 (doors at 6pm) at OMSI’s Empirical Theater.  Just $7 for non-members.  Get your tickets now, here!

Pints & Pixels – October 12th 7-10PM

The Florida Room – 435 N Killingsworth St, Portland, OR 97217

Thank you everyone! Our first event was a HUGE success with over 35 people attending and conversations going well into the night and continuing after the bar closed. We had people representing all facets of Portland’s Post Production world and even some local SFX artists joined us.

Congratulations to Ken Kurras who won our raffle to the Portland Creative Conference on Sept 29th. He’s already a pretty lucky fella, having just scored a job at Laika last month. We will try to have more giveaways and prizes in future events and I’ll post them whenever they will be available.

Thank you to everyone who came out, we hope you had a good time and are excited to meet again in October! Since the next meeting is so close to Halloween, I’m happy to say that we will be joined by more members of the Portland SFX community!

I’ve always been interested in stage and monster make-up, and it turns out SFX artists want to know how the digital side of monster FX happens too. I’ll be bringing a laptop, and if you worked on Grimm or have any monster work you want to show off, just email me a link or bring a flash drive and we can have a little Show-and-Tell! Who knows, maybe you’ll get some good ideas for the holiday!

This month we will me moving to The Florida Room in the NE. They have a nice little back room with a pool table and no windows that we’ll be taking over.

If you have any questions or comments, you can contact me at: dan@vfxpdx.com, or @danvfxpdx

Many of us have expressed the urge to meet more frequently and casually to talk shop over a drink or two. Entirely thanks to a certain cat(alyst) named Dan Short, this is finally happening.  VFX/PDX’ers, we present to you Pints and Pixels!  A logo is in order here:

The community in Portland is incredibly varied and diverse in abilities, medium and experience, and this is a place where we can all meet to share skills, techniques and the current talk of the town. Come out and share a drink with us on the second Thursday of every month from 7:00PM – 10:00PM.  First meeting – September 14th at Bunk Bar (SE).  Mark your calendar.

Bunk Bar
1028 SE Water Ave
Portland, OR 97214
Thurs, Sept 14 – 7-10pm

Agenda?  Let’s keep it loose!  Networking, recent work, a hot new plugin – anything goes at this early stage.  The main thing here is stepping out and seeing all the talented folks from other studios and such here;  everyone is eternally busy and there was getting to be a bit too much time between user group events, so now we have this to count on.

To help with reminders and tracking expected numbers, please nab a free ticket over at Eventbrite:
